Duke Energy Customers Face Staggering Bills, and It's Not Just About Usage!
Imagine opening your energy bill and seeing a shocking amount, especially when you haven't even indulged in any extravagant energy usage. This is the reality for many Cincinnati residents, and it's not just the cold weather to blame.
While the frigid temperatures of December and January have undoubtedly contributed to higher energy consumption, there's another factor at play: delivery charges. These fees, often assumed to be fixed, are actually variable and can significantly impact your monthly bill.
Take Kathy Develius, for example. She was stunned to see her Duke Energy bill triple in a single month. While she anticipated higher generation charges due to increased energy use, she was taken aback by the surge in delivery charges as well. "So I called Duke, and they explained that the rider covered maintenance of the electric lines and such," Kathy shared.
Michael, a resident of Clermont County, received an even more eye-opening bill. Out of his $300 charge, a whopping $171 was attributed to delivery fees. "It was under the fixed fees, not the usage-based ones. That's just not right," he exclaimed.
But here's where it gets controversial... According to the Ohio Public Utilities Commission (PUCO), what customers perceive as fixed delivery charges are, in fact, usage-based. Matt Schilling, a PUCO spokesman, clarified, "Base distribution rates are also a usage-based charge since you're utilizing Duke's wires and pipelines more during the cold months."
And this is the part most people miss... Grid upgrades, new transmission lines for data centers, and the development of new subdivisions have all contributed to rising delivery fees over the years. While Duke Energy spokesperson Matt Martin assures that these factors only have a small impact on bills, it's clear that delivery charges are not as straightforward as they seem.
So, what can customers do to reduce their bills? In Ohio, residents have the option to explore alternate energy suppliers through PUCO's Apples to Apples website. This can help save on generation charges. Additionally, simple measures like sealing drafts and lowering thermostats can reduce overall usage, even if they won't impact delivery fees.
