Teen E-bike Rider Carrying Knives Involved in Crash with Suspected Drug Driver (2026)

Bold statement upfront: a teenage e-bike rider was found with a machete and a knife after a serious crash, raising questions about weapon possession, drugs, and road safety. But here's where it gets controversial: how should communities respond when young riders are involved in incidents linked to suspected drug impairment?

Two arrests have been made in connection with the late-night collision on Barlow Moor Road in Chorlton, near Southern Cemetery, on Saturday, February 14. Emergency services were dispatched after a crash between a green BMW X2 and a Surron electric bike. The main road was closed to traffic for several hours while responders worked at the scene; an air ambulance was observed arriving as part of the emergency response.

The teenage e-bike rider, a 17-year-old boy, was rushed to Salford Royal Infirmary with injuries that were not considered life-threatening. At the scene, officers recovered a machete and a locking knife from him. Greater Manchester Police (GMP) confirmed the weapons were seized and that the teen was arrested on suspicion of possession of an offensive weapon. He was being held for questioning once medically fit.

The driver of the BMW underwent breath tests and drug testing at the scene. GMP said the driver appeared to be under the influence of cannabis and arrested him on suspicion of driving under the influence of drugs. The driver’s age has not yet been released, and inquiries continued into Sunday. Barlow Moor Road reopened overnight.

Images from the scene showed significant damage to the driver’s side of the BMW and deployed airbags. The e-bike lay on the ground nearby, alongside scattered clothing.

GMP notes that both the weapons have been seized and that ongoing investigations are in progress. Additional updates may follow as authorities review surveillance, medical reports, and witness statements.

Chorlton and broader Greater Manchester communities often face debates about road safety, youth behavior, and the effectiveness of current weapon- and drug-use policies on the roads. Should there be more targeted education for young riders about the dangers of combining motor vehicles, drugs, and weapon possession? How should law enforcement balance rapid response with safeguarding young people in similar situations? If you have thoughts or experiences related to this incident, share them in the comments to help broaden the discussion.
