Nolan McLean’s path to Team USA’s camp hit a brief snag when vertigo-like symptoms sidelined him for a couple of days. The Mets pitcher reported dizziness and a reduced appetite last Friday. By Saturday, his teammate Mendoza said the symptoms had improved. Although McLean was originally set to join Team USA in Arizona on Monday, the Mets decided to keep him in Port St. Lucie a bit longer to ensure he was fully back to normal.
McLean threw a side session on Sunday and, on Monday’s off-day, checked in at the Mets’ facility to play catch and consult with the medical staff. Mendoza indicated McLean is expected to pitch in a Minor League game on a back field on Wednesday.
“He needs to pitch for us tomorrow,” Mendoza stated. “If everything goes as planned, he’ll take the mound.”
Mendoza noted that McLean’s symptoms have resolved and that no medical tests were performed after the initial report.
“After he mentioned dizziness, we chose to err on the side of caution and keep him under observation here until we’re confident he’s cleared to go,” Mendoza explained. “Based on discussions with the doctors, for now he’s cleared.”
McLean is scheduled to start for Team USA against Italy on March 10. Team USA manager Mark DeRosa said on Monday that the situation would be evaluated day by day as McLean’s status is monitored.
