Census 2026: Unveiling the 33 Questions of the First Phase (2026)

The government has unveiled a list of 33 questions to be asked in the first phase of the census, sparking curiosity and potential debate. This phase, commencing on April 1st, will focus on creating a comprehensive household list, with a 30-day campaign in each state and union territory. But here's the catch: it will extend until September 30th, raising questions about the duration and its impact on data accuracy.

During the survey, census officers will inquire about homeownership status, usage, floor and roof materials, room count, and the gender of the head of the household. They will then delve into details about the house's usage, condition, and the number of occupants.

The census doesn't stop there. It will also gather information on basic amenities within homes, including the primary water and light sources, toilet availability and type, waste disposal, bathing facilities, kitchen access, LPG and PNG connections, and the main fuel used for cooking. And this is where it gets interesting: the census will also collect data on gadgets like radios, TVs, internet access, laptops, computers, phones, and even the type of vehicle owned. It will also ask about the primary grain consumed in the household and request a mobile number for census-related communication.

Citizens will have the option to self-enumerate 15 days before the 30-day household listing campaign begins. The census is a two-part process: household listing and housing census from April to September, followed by the enumeration of individuals in February 2027. This phased approach aims to ensure a thorough and accurate count, but it also raises questions about the logistics and potential challenges of such a lengthy process.
