The Steelers are reportedly counting on Aaron Rodgers to be their quarterback, but it's not a done deal just yet.
Steelers beat reporter Mark Kaboly recently shared his expectations for the future Hall of Fame quarterback's next move. According to Kaboly, the Steelers are hoping Rodgers will continue his NFL career with them, but it's not a guarantee.
"I think he will be their starting quarterback unless he makes a definitive decision in the next month that he's done with football entirely," Kaboly said, as reported by Steelers Depot. This statement hints at Rodgers' potential return without explicitly confirming it.
Kaboly further emphasized the Steelers' belief that Rodgers still wants to play, suggesting a strong expectation of his return.
Rodgers, 42, has been in communication with Mike McCarthy, who was recently hired as the Steelers' head coach. McCarthy confirmed their conversations on The Pat McAfee Show, mentioning that it's a normal process for players to take time off after a long season.
"I have spoken to Aaron Rodgers a number of times," McCarthy said. "Like anyone who's played the game for a long time, it's important to get away, so that's a normal process. I think it's important for all these players to decompress and step away after the season, and that's really the mindset he's in."
During his introductory press conference, McCarthy expressed his willingness to have Rodgers as his signal-caller for a 23rd season in the league.
"Definitely, I don't see why you wouldn't," McCarthy said in response to a question about Rodgers' potential return.
The pair's previous collaboration in Green Bay, where they won the 2011 Super Bowl, adds an intriguing dynamic to the potential reunion.
Rodgers' performance last season was impressive, with 3,322 passing yards, 24 touchdowns, and seven interceptions in 16 games. However, after the Steelers' early exit from the playoffs with a 30-6 loss to the Texans, Rodgers remained non-committal about his future.
"I'm not going to make any emotional decisions," Rodgers stated. "At this point, it's been a fun year. We've faced a lot of challenges, but it's been a great year overall, and being part of this team is a significant part of that."
